Reason to Believe

"The arc of history is longer than human vision. It bends. We abolished slavery, we granted universal suffrage. We have done hard things before. And every time it took a terrible fight between people who could not imagine changing the rules, and those who said, 'We already did. We have made the world new.' The hardest part will be to convince yourself of the possibilities, and hang on. If you run out of hope at the end of the day, to rise in the morning and put it on again with your shoes. Hope is the only reason you won’t give in, burn what’s left of the ship and go down with it"
-Barbara Kingsolver

Sometimes it feels like the whole world is spinning, and I'm watching it blur around me. I wonder, how do other people run this fast? Was it because I never ran track in high school? If we lived in a waterworld (much like Kevin Costner... minus the gills) would I be as good at moving at a recklessly fast pace? (I only say that because I did swim in high school, which might just give me a fighting chance)

At any rate, lately it seems like moving has been ridiculously hard. Progressing at school or even at life is just an uphill battle. On some days I can juggle flaming swords while spinning 8 plates of precious china. But today my act is standing still, getting through the day without falling over. Impressive, no?

It's a rough fight, because the minute you sit back and relax, the opportunities pass you by. So you keep running until you're spinning circles, left in a daze and wondering where am I? and how did I get here? Why am I covered in pink paint? (Trust me, it happens to everyone).

But we keep running because it means we're part of this world and that we get to contribute. We keep running because  we have opinions, we have passions, we have dreams, goals, desires. The minute we stop running is the minute we no longer have a say in the future of this world.

So keep running. Make the world new.
